You know, I used to scratch my head trying to figure this one out myself. The popularity of outdoor sheds sort of took me by surprise. But now that I have a few of my own and have helped others in securing the right one for their needs. It makes sense. The fact that a storage shed gives you additional space to keep your things under cover and behind walls and doors is attractive. It’s far more affordable a solution than adding onto your existing living space or building a garage. I just love what outdoor storage sheds can do. My name is Tom. I’m glad you are here as this time around I would like to explain the reasons why outdoor sheds are so popular.
4 Reasons Why Outdoor Sheds Are So Popular
1. Equipment Storage
I may as well jump into this with the most obvious of reasons. For some of us, we seem to collect a lot of pieces of equipment. In the context of a yard shed, that equipment can be on the big and bulky side such as a riding lawnmower. Other pieces of equipment can be classified as sporting gear and can include bicycles, portable basketball hoops and even weightlifting benches. If you happen to have a lot of equipment and not all that much space to keep it, an outdoor storage shed could be the most sensible solution to that problem.
2. Organization
I know, that can be considered a dirty word of sorts. However, a storage shed does allow one to get a little better organized thanks to the many different options and additional storage packages that are available. I like to use pegboards and hooks as well as cabinets. You may prefer to store items in boxes or on shelves. Regardless of how you use the storage space, you will eventually discover that if you keep your space organized, you’ll be able to find things quicker. The smaller size of a storage shed is a great place to start figuring out how to organize your stuff.
3. More Garage Storage Room
If your garage is already stuffed full and you find it difficult to get your vehicle in or out of it, an outdoor shed can be a great help. That’s because you can free up a lot of space just by moving the extra items that may be essential but for some reason are clogging up your garage, to a new location. The storage shed should not be used as a ‘catch all’ either. You know, you have nowhere to put something so it winds up in the shed by default.
The idea behind using a storage shed to open up space in your garage is to actually make both your garage and the storage shed two spaces with improved functionality. I’m a bit of an organizational freak, so scoring two places I can use for different functions is a big win, win in my mind.
4. The Overflow Storage Solution
Yup. Sooner or later I was going to hint at that thing called ‘overflow’. While in reality it’s a sign of having too much stuff and not enough room to keep it all under control, a storage shed is a quick solution to this problem. Would I use an outdoor storage shed for overflow storage? Well, maybe for a short period of time until I got my act together enough to conduct a serious cleaning, purging and organizing process.
However, that’s me. Not every house, apartment or condo comes with adequate storage space for your stuff. I get that. In this instance, using an outdoor shed for overflow storage is not only logical, it would be a practical solution. You just need to know how big an outdoor shed you need.
I Hope This All Ties It Together For You
I did put a great deal of thought into what I was going to write about in this specific article. It actually can reveal to you a bit more about trends than I chose to let on. Storage sheds have come into our lives as a means to give us an easy way to store belongings that have no other logical location to be kept. Most of the larger items won’t fit into a basement room and your garage should really be used to store your vehicle.
Outdoor sheds have given us a place to put things and room to acquire more things that we can’t store in our homes or garages. Is that a good or bad thing? Not really. I just like the fact that I can stash some stuff somewhere I can lock and keep secure until I need to use any of it again.
My husband and I were just talking about having an outdoor shed for our new house. What would you advise? Buy one or make one?
Hi Angela, honestly these put-it-together-yourself ones that I talk about on the site are actually really good. The larger ones do need either a semi or permanent base though, so make sure you read up on the construction needs for each. I find the plastic-resin material just last longer and is totally easy to clean. For the smaller sheds, these can be moved around really easily, so if you tend to change up your spaces often this would be handy. Or if you ever want to take it with you if you move house. The biggest question is ‘What do you need it for and what are you putting in there?’. Hope this gives you some points to think about. Best of luck, Tom.
